Lately, I've been noticing an encouraging trend for Bluesails Sportfishing Charters of having more families with young kids onboard (even as young as 5yrs); usually Dads introducing Junior to the best hobby in the world: big game sportfishing!

The kids excitement & enthusiasm is always contagious & makes for a memorable experience out on the water, & it's really satisfying helping to facilita...

It’s that time of the year when we reflect back on the previous twelve months and start writing up our New Years resolutions.

Here at Bluesails Sportfishing, our New Years Resolutions are pretty much the same every year (ie: “Catch record breaking Sailfish”) so moving on to our reflections for 2015....and since it’s not only Thanksgiving Day but also Thursday, we think it's a perfect day for...

“My big fish must be somewhere.”

Old Man and the Sea, Ernest Hemingway

Nearly every male angler I’ve had onboard asks the question, “How big do the Sails get in Kuala Rompin, compared to other parts of the world?” Frankly, it’s tough to get Sails over the 50kg mark in Kuala Rompin waters. That being said, over the past couple of seasons, we have boated a few Sails that were conservatively c...

A question I'm often asked about Sailfish is "what is the purpose of the huge dorsal fin or sail?"

While free swimming or snorkelling at close quarters with these bold and curious Sailers (bold because they’re not shy to swim close to free-divers & display intimidating postures with their dorsal fins spread high & wide) I have observed that the fin plays an integral part in the awesome feedi...

Bluesails Sportfishing has always been aware of the impact that big game fishing can have on the marine environment in general, and on the health and mortality of billfish in particular. We therefore make a concerted effort to ensure that this impact is kept to a minimum, while still enabling our guests to enjoy this adrenalin-filled sport. We hope that the experience of catching and handling...

The extensive coverage in the news and social media over the past few weeks involving Cecil the Lion, killed by a recreational hunter in Zimbabwe on the 1st July 2015, really got me thinking about whether sport fishing—with its reputation for being a bit of a trophy hunt itself—can ever be compatible with conservation.

It's a concept that I first had to wrap my mind around in January 20...

It was a great fishing adventure weekend, hunting for juve Black Marlin in Tioman waters. Day 1 produced a decent size Sail with loads of bottom / bait-fishing to keep t...

For many years the accepted local lore in Kuala Rompin has been that the fishing is slow during the summer– as if the Sailfish, like everybody else, go on vacation or home leave with the kids from June to August.

The reality is that the Sails are still around during the summer….just enjoying a vacation of sorts closer to Pulau Tioman, Malaysia.

The hot summer months have always been the perf...

I have been busy researching the history of Pulau Tioman for the Bluesails Sportfishing Blog, and except for the minor irritation of a race horse named (of all things) "Pulau Tioman” in the 1980's that played havoc with my keyword searches, it was great fun and extremely interesting.

So, following are a few of the more fascinating (and lesser known) facts about Pulau Tioman, an unspoilt isl...

Ah, who can forget actress Mitzi Gaynor working up a lather while singing "I'm gonna wash that man right outta my hair” in that famous scene from the 1958 Hollywood movie 'South Pacific''?

The movie was based on the hit Rodgers and Hammerstein musical of the same name (that was in turn, based on a book by James A. Michener entitled Tales of the South Pacific) and tells the tale of an American...
